Majlis of 10th Muharram

Introduction

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem.  Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his purified household.

We have gathered here on this solemn day to commemorate the tragic events of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, a day that marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This day is not just a historical event; it is a profound lesson in sacrifice, justice, and the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood.

Historical Background

The story of Ashura begins with the events that led to the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Yazid ibn Muawiya, the tyrannical ruler of the Umayyad Caliphate, demanded allegiance from Imam Hussain (AS). Imam Hussain (AS), a paragon of justice and righteousness, refused to pledge loyalty to a corrupt and oppressive regime. His refusal was not out of personal defiance but a principled stance against tyranny and injustice.

Imam Hussain (AS), along with his family and a small group of loyal companions, embarked on a journey to Kufa, responding to the calls for help from the oppressed people there. However, their path was blocked, and they were forced to camp on the plains of Karbala. Surrounded by Yazid’s forces, they were denied water and basic needs for three days.

The Day of Ashura

On the 10th of Muharram, the day of Ashura, the battle began. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Imam Hussain (AS) and his followers displayed unparalleled bravery and steadfastness. The day witnessed immense tragedy as one by one, the companions and family members of Imam Hussain (AS) were martyred. Among them were his young nephew Qasim, his infant son Ali Asghar, and his valiant brother Abbas.

Imam Hussain (AS) himself fought valiantly, embodying the spirit of resistance and sacrifice. His martyrdom on the plains of Karbala was not just the death of an individual but a monumental stand against oppression and a beacon of hope for future generations.

Lessons from Karbala

The events of Karbala impart timeless lessons:

  1. Stand for Justice: Imam Hussain (AS) demonstrated that one must stand for justice, even if it means standing alone. His refusal to accept Yazid’s rule was a testament to his commitment to truth and justice.
  2. Sacrifice: The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions teaches us the value of selflessness. Their willingness to give up their lives for a greater cause is a powerful reminder of the true essence of sacrifice.
  3. Perseverance in Faith: Despite facing insurmountable odds, Imam Hussain (AS) and his followers remained steadfast in their faith. This perseverance is a lesson for all believers to hold onto their faith, no matter the challenges.
  4. Compassion and Mercy: Even in the face of cruelty, Imam Hussain (AS) exhibited compassion. His treatment of the enemy’s soldiers and his prayers for the misguided reflect the Islamic principles of mercy and compassion.

Reflection and Mourning

As we remember the tragedy of Karbala, it is essential to reflect on our own lives. Are we upholding the principles of justice and righteousness in our actions? Are we ready to make sacrifices for the greater good? Do we exhibit compassion and mercy in our dealings with others?

The mourning of Imam Hussain (AS) is not just about shedding tears but about internalizing the values he stood for. Let us use this period of mourning to renew our commitment to these values and strive to live our lives in a manner that honors the legacy of Imam Hussain (AS).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the majlis of 10th Muharram is a solemn occasion to remember the unparalleled sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to justice, sacrifice, and faith. Let us honor their memory by embodying the values they stood for and passing these lessons to future generations.

May Allah (SWT) grant us the strength to uphold these principles and continue the legacy of Imam Hussain (AS).
